AMAZING CHRYSOLINA CEREALIS THE RAINBOW LEAF BEETLE
Habitat: Eurasia; In the UK, this endangered beetle Rainbow Leaf Beetle (Chrysolina cerealis) is currently recognized only from Caernarvonshire in Wales; since 1980 it has been recorded from Snowdon and Cwm Idwal. Somewhere else the species is found in northern, central and southern Europe
Status: Rainbow Leaf Beetle (Chrysolina cerealis) is Classified as Endangered in the UK and protected under Schedule five of the Wildlife and Countryside Act, 1981
You don’t often hear about insects being endangered since they’re usually found in big numbers. On the other hand, the Rainbow Leaf Beetle (Chrysolina cerealis) is definitely an very rare species of bug that’s only found in a couple little populations (though they’re regarded as verydifficult to discover, so perhaps there are actually more out there we don’t know of!) in Eurasia. It’s really interesting that such a vividly colored beetle is found in Europe; I would picture this being found in the jungles of Borneo or some other very tropical location in-stead!
At only five.five – ten mm in length, the Rainbow Leaf Beetle (Chrysolina cerealis) is arguably probably the most beautiful beetle in all of Great britain. It has long bands of red, green, and purple running down its wing cases, or “elytra.”
The species is being monitored and it appears that there hasn’t definitely been a decline in population numbers per se; it may just be that this species was at any time rare! Makes sense – rainbows are, after all, are a special treat. It makes sense that a Rainbow Leaf Beetle Chrysolina cerealis could be just as coveted as the natural weather phenomenon it’s called after!
